Utah commemorates March 10th 1959

Commemorating March 10th 1959, the Utah Tibetan community gathered in the freezing cold weather. Sweet tea and butter tea were brought by the community to keep each other warm. Despite being a weekday and the program starting early in the morning, the Utah Tibetan community had a good turnout. They assembled in front of the Federal building and marched through downtown to the Capitol and then back to the Federal building. Old and young both braved the freezing temperatures with high spirits. March 10th, commemorates the 1959 Tibetan uprising against the Chinese occupation in Tibet. The failure of the armed rebellion ultimately resulted in a violent crackdown on Tibetan independence movements, and the flight of the Dalai lama into exile.
